Most people have their own personal concept of what “sexy” is. Therefore, the definition of “sexy” will cover many varieties of ideals. Over the years, the perceptions of individuals gradually shapes the perceptions of society as a whole, which in turn shapes the perceptions of individuals. This gradual circle of perceptual shifting is how we grow as a society. Sometimes the shifts are for the better, and some are for the worse. Sex, for most of the twentieth century, was considered to be a topic that should not be discussed in polite company. The Victorian era made the discussion of sex a taboo. But coupled with the ascension of the film industry as an entertainment media for the masses a profound shift on society mores resulted.  The film industry stars tended to be slimmer than the norm for society in that time. The explanation was quite legitimate. There is an optical illusion with cameras that seems to add pounds to anyone on camera, so slimmer stars off camera looked normal on-camera.  As these stars were seen more and more in public, and because these stars were all promoted as sex symbols, society gradually shifted its idea of sexy from voluptuous to thin.

Throughout history, voluptuous women were preferentially sought out by men. Men were attracted to larger women because they understood that they tended to be better child bearers and more nurturing. Even 50,000 years ago, figurines that have been unearthed have shown that larger women were considered to be mother figures and the embodiment of life. During the last ice age, cave dwelling people in Europe created figurines of large women goddesses. Their ideal of the embodiment of a fruitful and renewing life. The lyrics in “Fiddler On The Roof” (the song “If I Was a Rich Man”) a story about Russian rural society at the turn of the twentieth century talks about a rich man’s wife as having a “proper double chin”. In other words, for much of history, being portly was a status symbol, because it proved you had plenty to eat, and therefore must be well to do.

At the end of the twentieth century, there was a major amount of immigration to North America and Great Britain from mid-eastern and far-eastern cultures. With these cultures have also come the more traditional preference for larger families and women who will bear larger families.  A large body is no longer a detriment and soon will be considered an essential asset for women. Perhaps in a few more years, more heavy women will be seen as iconic sex symbols. Mae West was very voluptuous, but in the early 20;s and 30;s she was most men’s wet dream.

Society is undergoing another shift so that skinny boy figures are less acceptable and voluptuous naturally endowed women are back in fashion. Skinny women are flocking to plastic surgeons in droves for boob and butt implants. For those who cannot afford plastic surgery, slender women are lining up at lingerie stores to buy double and triple push up bras.  The result is a lot of disappointed men who date a skinny woman with large breasts only to find the mountains become mole hills when they have sex.  Men have finally started to clue in that naturally large boobs usually come with an additional amount of body padding elsewhere, and they are okay with it. Voluptuous is in again.  And on that note, who is more voluptuous than a BBW?
